Postcards from faraway lands

travels, ramblings, musings of a twentysomething

“Leaving is not enough. You must stay gone. Train your heart like a dog. Change the locks even on the house he’s never visited. You lucky, lucky girl. You have an apartment just your size. A bathtub full of tea. A heart the size of Arizona, but not nearly so arid. Don’t wish away your cracked past, your crooked toes, your problems are papier mache puppets you made or bought because the vendor at the market was so compelling you just had to have them. You had to have him. And you did. And now you pull down the bridge between your houses, you make him call before he visits, you take a lover for granted, you take a lover who looks at you like maybe you are magic. Make the first bottle you consume in this place a relic. Place it on whatever altar you fashion with a knife and five cranberries. Don’t lose too much weight. Stupid girls are always trying to disappear as revenge. And you are not stupid. You loved a man with more hands than a parade of beggars, and here you stand. Heart like a four-poster bed. Heart like a canvas. Heart leaking something so strong they can smell it in the street.”

“Everything about her seems to be saying, Listen, if you don’t look attentively, if you don’t go beyond my simplicity to detect the simmering volcano in me, you are not it.”

Yesterday, it finally happened. I met face-to-face with my favourite animal, the pangolin. This fine specimen, Lucky, was the sole survivor from a truck-load of pangolins confiscated, hence the name.
When I arrived at the rescue centre, he was just waking up in his box, and we exchanged a few glances and, what I like to think, profound philosophical thoughts about the brevity of life.
I got to take this great snapshot of him and, as I wandered off, I could hear his buddy P43 snore in his cave….

Fascinating creatures.

off for some adventuring!

The forest beckons! Off to Cuc Phuong National Park to see ancient trees and some of Vietnam’s most endangered animals. I hope I get to see a Delacour langur!

“The only dream worth having is to dream that you will live while you are alive, and die only when you are dead. To love, to be loved.
To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you.
To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair.
To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple.
To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch.
To try and understand. To never look away.
And never, never to forget.”
